Venture Analyst
Location: Edgecliff, Sydney

Shearwater Capital is a Sydney-based venture fund that invests in high-growth technology companies across Australia and New Zealand.

About the Role:
We’re looking for a generalist Venture Analyst to join our team in Sydney. This is a wide-ranging role suited to someone who is bright, analytical, curious, proactive and interested in the startup ecosystem across ANZ.
You will be responsible for supporting the team in sourcing and evaluating new investment opportunities, as well as tracking the performance of our portfolio companies. You’ll be involved in all parts of the venture investment process — from market mapping and founder outreach through to financial analysis, memo writing and portfolio reporting.
You don’t need to have prior venture capital experience.
Key Responsibilities
Deal Sourcing & Research
- Research emerging sectors and technology trends across Australia and New Zealand
- Identify and map high-potential startups
- Build and maintain our internal database of target companies
- Create outreach strategies to connect with high-potential founders
- Work toward sourcing targets with the goal of bringing forward companies we invest in
- Post-outreach, cultivate relationships via content and other strategies
Investment Analysis
- Working to our existing templates, generate financial models for prospective investments
- Analyse business models, market dynamics and SaaS metrics
- Support the team with preparation of investment memos
- Assist with diligence workstreams across commercial, financial and legal
Portfolio Support
- Use our portfolio monitoring tools to track the monthly performance of our portfolio companies
- Prepare concise updates on metrics and performance
- Work with the team to stay close to how our companies are tracking
What We’re Looking For
Background
- 1 – 4 years of relevant experience in finance, accounting, consulting, startups, venture capital, or a related industry
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in finance, commerce, economics, law, or a related field
- Very strong academic performance
- Demonstrated extra-curricular experience
Skills & Traits
- Analytical thinker with strong financial modelling and numerical skills
- Clear and concise communicator — written and verbal
- Highly organised and detail-oriented
- Proactive self-starter with a bias to action
- Curious, commercially minded, and deeply interested in startups and technology
- Attention to detail and a high standard of ethics & professionalism
